Haunting Images: A Cultural Account of Selective Reproduction in Vietnam (Philip E. Lilienthal Books)By Tine M. Gammeltoft

Based on years of careful ethnographic fieldwork in Hanoi, Haunting Images offers a frank and compassionate account of the moral quandaries that accompany innovations in biomedical technology. At the center of the book are case studies of thirty pregnant women whose fetuses were labeled “abnormal” after an ultrasound examination. By following these women and their relatives through painful processes of reproductive decision making, Tine M. Gammeltoft offers intimate ethnographic insights into everyday life in contemporary Vietnam and a sophisticated theoretical exploration of how subjectivities are forged in the face of moral assessments and demands.

Across the globe, ultrasonography and other technologies for prenatal screening offer prospective parents new information and present them with agonizing decisions never faced in the past. For anthropologists, this diagnostic capability raises important questions about individuality and collectivity, responsibility and choice. Arguing for more sustained anthropological attention to human quests for belonging, Haunting Images addresses existential questions of love and loss that concern us all.

Review
"This is a powerful, haunting cultural account of selective reproduction in Vietnam. I encourage each reader to think through what this means and what this tells us about pregnancy management throughout the world."--Barbara Katz Rothman"Sociology of Health & Illness" (08/15/2015)

"This deft and often moving volume makes a signature contribution to the growing anthropological literature on Vietnam ... Keenly observed and compellingly written."--Martha Lincoln"Medicine Anthropology Theory" (09/09/2015)

"This is a moving ethnography that haunts the reader long thereafter. . . . Daring and promising."--Catalina Tesar"Social Anthropology" (05/25/2015)"

"Powerful, heart-wrenching, and beautifully written . . . As anthropology, the book is also a fine example of the ethnographer's craft. . . . Highly recommended."--Erik Harms"Journal of Southeast Asian Studies" (04/17/2015)

"Fascinating and powerful . . . "Haunting Images" is an outstanding piece of scholarship that brings new dimensions to thinking about key themes in social theory."--Tsipy Ivry"Medical Antrhopology Quarterly" (03/27/2015)

"Beautifully written . . . a must read."--Ann Marie Leshkowich"American Ethnologist" (05/01/2015)

From the Inside Flap
"This deeply moving and path-breaking ethnography takes us to the social crossroads of global medicine in post-war Vietnam. Here struggles over belonging and value are part and parcel of haunting histories of loss and become the very fabric of visceral conceptual work.” —João Biehl, author of Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment

"In this beautifully crafted ethnography of intense pregnancy sonograms, Tine Gammeltoft reveals screen fetuses that stand at complex historical and cultural intersections.  At once biological and cosmological, their haunting images are constructed where public health commitments, gendered and kinship decision-making, religious traditions, and the half-life of Agent Orange all meet.  This is the first full-length study of sonography in a developing-nation context and a must-read for anyone who wants to know what lies beyond individual 'choice' in the use of a selective reproductive technology." —Rayna Rapp, Professor of Anthropology, New York University

"This is a luminous, compassionate book about complex moral dilemmas facing Vietnamese women and families who receive a diagnosis of fetal abnormality late in pregnancy. Reading this book was a powerful, humbling experience. Gammeltoft courageously shows us that there are other perspectives that must be considered, reminding us in this age of neoliberal subject-making that parents-to-be are also charged with fulfilling genealogical, spiritual, and national responsibilities. Belonging and longing are linked in this narrative, as people yearn for futures (and pasts) other than those they receive."—Lynn M. Morgan, Mount Holyoke College, author of Icons of Life: A Cultural History of Human Embryos (University of California Press, 2009).

"Haunting Images focuses on difficult moral decisions, on questions of belonging and on what constitutes a human being. Gammeltoft brings us a nuanced understanding of the lived texture of life in Vietnam today. This ethnography is delicate, sensitive, loving, and complex, faithful to the tone of the people and the place and to the ambiguities of life. The issues raised in Vietnam confront us all."—Diane Fox, Senior Lecturer of Anthropology and Vietnamese Studies, College of the Holy Cross

Identity theft is the crime of this century. Just ask Frank Abagnale of Catch Me If You Can fame. He states so in the Q&A of the latest edition of that book. So here, then, is the true-crime book of this century. This is the first book on the subject from the inside, told by someone who's assumed hundreds of identities and become rich off it. Not only does the author reveal how ID theft is done, he tells loads of wildly unbelievable but true stories about his impersonations as they led to riches. Some of them are as funny and outrageous as they are amazing.

At the same time he tells people how to protect themselves from the gangs of ID thieves thriving in the real and virtual worlds of today, and as he explains in his foreword, Glenn Hastings is writing this book to repent for his crimes. While committing them, he failed to take into account the damage they caused his victims. He states that had he continued on his massive trail of ID and credit fraud, he could have conceivably made a billion dollars. But enough was enough; ultimately he had to do the right thing.

Students’ Reactions to Not for Happiness: “Having a map of the path that shows where each practice is headed helps me to see what each stage is preparing me for. Even the chapters that at first didn’t seem relevant to my current practice contained such great gems of teaching that they turned out to be extremely relevant and very helpful.”—Catherine Fordham “To me, this book is like the world’s best kind of GPS! I feel that by following its guidance, even though I am not a skilful driver, I will have the confidence to drive through my Ngöndro practice—and may even end up feeling quite good about it!”—Helena Wang

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche has accomplished quite a coup: a text on the Ngondro preliminaries that simultaneously brings the Ngondro overachiever down to earth, provides a swift quick in the bum for the Ngondro slacker, and fosters greater enthusiasm and understanding in those already in the thick of the practices. The book is strong on context and the visceral, lived experience of the practices, less so on the detail, which Rinpoche repeatedly suggests is best to obtain directly from a teacher. The practice descriptions present the Longchen Nyingthig preliminary practices of the Nyingma lineage, and are quite sufficient to lay out the mechanics, particularly if accompanied by more specific commentary for those who want to pin down intricate points. The context and background explanations, however, apply to any Ngondro--indeed to any Tibetan Buddhist practice.More importantly, the text provides insight and straight-to-the-heart purpose for engaging in the practices themselves. Rinpoche speaks with one foot solidly grounded in the traditional theory and methodology of practice, another in an open and kind understanding of practical challenges modern practitioners face. He is a recognized incarnation of a great Tibetan master, yet is thoroughly modern in his approach and life (he is also well known as the film maker behind "The Cup" and "Travelers and Magicians.") The combination of tradition and modernity provides for a vivid description of the meaning behind the practices, and a lively approach to actively encountering it in our own experience. The English editing is superb--the language is elegant, fluid, and rich without getting in the way of the substance. As a Kagyu practitioner who remains an active fan after having completed one Mahamudra Ngondro, I found much to carry into my ongoing practice at all levels. As a student and translator of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy in traditional monasteries in Nepal and India, I recognized the scholarly vein of the monastic training in Rinpoche's delivery. Rinpoche peppers the text with seminal and relevant quotes and advice from genuine teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, particularly the Nyingma and Kagyu schools emphasizing the Ngondro as a foundational practice. The result is a text inlaid with nuggets of practical wisdom available for the reader to mine, contemplate, and apply to their practice. Much food for thought on many levels, practical and profound. Rinpoche is particularly effective in demystifying the central role of devotion to all practice.I would highly recommend this thoroughly engaging book to those who wish to bring their spiritual practice to life. Sound, pragmatic advice that will get you reflecting on your motivation and approach in positive ways throughout the day, and send you to the cushion with fresh and enlivening insight to fuel your practice of awakening. I, for one, foresee returning to its inspiring and grounding blessings again and again. May all beings develop and suffuse their mindstreams with genuine devotion and understanding, bringing it to the complete perfection of buddhahood for the sake of all that lives!

I love this writer and his way of teaching. This is the second of his books I've read and I'm about to start his third. He is a traditionalist but makes it very relevant to the world we live in today. It gets a little dry in some places, but I found it very inspiring too

Clear and well explained...something difficult to find in many books written by Tibetan masters - it will clear up so many questions about finding a teacher etc. I have the audio and book. One of most treasured dharma books. Dzongsar Khyentse is always a great teacher and communicator.

If you are looking for "comfort food" do not buy this book! The author say in his introduction: if you want to feel happy go get a massage! This book is for buddhists that know how dangerous it is to be happy with yourself, to be satisfied with your life and with your religious path. This is not a good for one that wishes to fell good. On the other hand, if you want to enter the path of ego taming this is the right book for you. Taming the mind is a huge challenge and it is wonderful to have Dzongsar Rinpoche as a guide. It is a real blessing! Great book, not recommended for sissies! It is a book for the bold ones that have the courage to search their true nature, cut all illusions and be rewarded with real happiness - enlightenment!

i find this book to be more difficult to understand than Rinpoche's other books such as the guru dirnks bourbon and what makes you not a buddhist. so i plan to go back to this book in the future when my understanding goes deeper.

This book would be an invaluable resource for those doing ngondro, which is its intended purpose. In addition, it brings the reader into contact with an original and powerful mind and a sincere practitioner. The author is demanding and direct. He strongly espouses traditional practices, while being deeply familiar with Western culture.

Phenomenal, easy-to-understand but thorough intro to the ngondro practices from a Nyingma perspective but with valuable insights relevant to all sects of Tibetan buddhism. This was a great read for me and dispelled much of the confusion as well as my urges to ask overly-analytical questions instead of just getting down to the practice. Highly recommended for Buddhist practitioners.

I live in a remote part of the world, unable to enjoy gathering with a sangha . You could say I am self-taught insofar as Budhism and the Dharma are concerned and rely on the books I am able to purchase on my Kindle for guidance. I felt I had reached a point in my practice where I was ready to take the necessary steps to go deeper ( or higher ! ) This book was for me an inspiration and a very clear guide in understanding the preliminary practices. I love the way Jamrang tells it like it is and believe he has a real talent for communicating with those of us born and raised in a Western culture.

Rediscovering the Social Group: A Self-Categorization TheoryFrom Blackwell Pub

This book presents a new theory of the social group which seeks to explain how individuals become unified into a group and capable of collective behaviour. It represents an important step forward in the seminal programme of research on social categorization and social identity carried out by John Turner and his colleagues with the late Henri Tajfel. The work challenges the dominant theory of the social group in psychology, that of social independence. It argues that individuals become a group not in so far as they develop personal relationships based on the mutual satisfaction of their needs, but by developing a shared social categorization of themselves in contrast to others, a shared perception of "us" in contrast to "them". The text summarizes classic psychological theories of the group, describes and explains the important effects of group membership on social behaviour, outlines self-categorization theory in full and shows how the general perspective has been applied in research on group formation and cohesion, social influence, the polarization of social attitudes, crowd psychology and social stereotyping.
