The second half of the book dealing with pure cryptographic topics seems to have been written in a different style which made the book very attractive as a read - very informative and educational and so a great set of chapters to read (Chapters 4 and 5). The book is worth the purchase for those chapters alone. Chapters 1-3 had good parts and bad parts, there was some good educational material in there but it was really spoilt by stabs at competing vendors needlessly. Honestly Id rather not have read those parts because they had less to do with the technical and more to do with marketing and competitive advertising in them. In summary Id would buy the book for chapters 4 and 5.There is a very minor nit in that when I read the book in the amazon previewer it was in color - the actual book in paper form is rather less than flattering black and white with grey scale which really ruins the reading experience. I do like the illustrations and they were done with some obvious love and care and are worth looking at during the reading experience in color - they enhance the experience in my humble opinion.

Even so, 99% of all operating systems books focus on big OSs like those, with little mention of the embedded and real-time OSs that surround us. Likewise 99% of all computer security books focus on big OSs like those. Attackers aren't so narrow-minded, though, and demonstrated by Mirai and Stuxnet.This book does an outstanding job of widening the focus of computing security. It emphasizes the safety-criticality of some embedded systems, like the ones in an insulin pump or anti-lock brake system - the kind of systems that can kill people if they misbehave (or are maliciously directed to misbehave). Although this book stresses resistance to attack, authorization, and information release, a very large part of this discussion talks about program correctness. That certainly makes sense, becauseA) so many attacks enter systems through buggy software, like buffer over-run vulnerabilities, andB) if a bug is when a program behaves in ways that violate specifications (even implicit ones), behavior of a compromised system is certainly a bug.I've found a few things to disagree with, except for one blooper (below). Admittedly, many embedded developers will find material here outside of their needs. Well, "embedded systems" cover a very large range, so that's hardly a surprise. I recommend this for its breadth, and for its attention to details of RTOS behavior that other books skip over. Truly, a valuable resource.The only conspicuous blooper I found was on p.252, regarding ring oscillators built from chains of "not" gates. Fig 4.29 shows a ring [so-called] oscillator built from two "not" gates. I think the usual name for this circuit is a 'latch'. Ring oscillators oscillate with odd numbers of not/nand gates. An even number of not/nand gates will sit quietly and happily with an exact alternation of 1 and 0 outputs, all the way down to the n=2 case. N=2 is called a static RAM cell.Outside of that, and outside of material beyond my current interests, it's all good.-- wiredweird

I have been designing and implementing security products for about 7+ years now (embedded systems for 12yrs) to "high assurance" standards and I have to say these authors have done a great job with this book. I usually don't like to buy books that have not been heavily rated yet, but with security books you don't want a 10 year old book (unless maybe it is cryptography!) if you want something that is relevant. That is why I am taking the time to rate this book. I encourage anyone considering this book to buy it right now. The issues and technologies are relevant and the authors have done a great job putting this together. I am very experienced in this area, but I think it is a pretty easy read... that being said I have only got through the first three chapters so far so I will update this if I change my mind!UPDATE: I finished this book about a week ago and I still recommend it. However I will say it is a bit slanted toward Green Hills... probably has to do with the author's close relationship with them! (I'll let you look it up). So read with that in mind. You see a similar slant/sales job in the model driven design (MDD) section that was written by another person with a company that sells a tool for MDD. I would say read the content and get out the security concepts without taking too much stock in how it may reflect on a competiting vendor products.I also want to add that as far as the "Embedded Cryptography" section of the book... it is nice to have in the book but if you want to learn about cryptography there are much better sources out there. This book isn't meant to just be a source for crypto so it makes sense but just want to make the readers aware. Some suggestions for a starter book that is "Applied Cryptography" by Schenier. Another great book that includes the mathematical basis is "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" by Paar and Pelzl. The nice thing about "Understanding Cryptorgraphy" is it doesn't require you to delve into the math but makes it available. So it is suitable for a novice and the experienced. There are also follow on books like "Practical Cryptography" by Ferguson and Scheneir that are really good, but I would suggest reading this one after one of the other two mentioned above. If you like a bit of history (which I don't generally, but really liked this book anyway) I also suggest "The Code Book" which is different from the former two in that it reads more like a story of crypto and its evolution with interesting insight on how ciphers have been broken and how new ciphers have been developed as opposed to just a focus on explanation of modern types of ciphers and specific cipher algorithms. Another book by Kahn call "The Codebreakers" has a lot of crypto history but the book is HUGE and, in my opinion, boring. I didn't get too far into "The Codebreakers" before I gave it away!

This is not quite what I thought it was . . . I was thinking this would be primarily freezer meals, like if you want to do a once-a-month cooking marathon day, then have a freezer full of meals you can pull out and throw in the crock pot, or defrost in the frig then warm-up quickly that evening. This is not that. Most of the make-ahead suggestions are things like the option of marinading the chicken the night before, or putting together ingredients in the morning before you go to work (who has time for that?). Things that experienced cooks would know anyway. That said, it is America's Test Kitchen, so I know all the recipes will be excellent, so it is not that much of a disappointment, and the holiday dishes section will be handy. Just not quite what I was after.

This book is written just like most ATK publications with each recipe written to produce the final product from start to finish. But at the end of each recipe (sometimes on the following page) are instructions to modify the recipe "TO MAKE AHEAD". One must therefore adjust the recipe if you intend to make it ahead.Even though a casserole is to be baked 24 hous later, instructions often start: "1. Adjust oven rack to ........... position and heat oven to ....... degrees."WARNING: Make sure you read and incorporate all "TO MAKE AHEAD" instructions when making the recipe. The editors should have made the modifications before publishing. A very serious mistake! These are the same previously-published recipes with "make ahead" recommendations attached!.ATK (America's Test Kitchen, Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country) have been publishing "Make-Ahead" for years (The Best Make-Ahead Recipe, 2007, Make-Ahead Recipes, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, Make-Ahead Dinners, 2014, Make-Ahead Appetizers, 2014, The Make-Ahead Cook, 2014, and All-Time Best Make Ahead Recipes, 2015) in addition to recipes in CI and CC magazines. It would be impossible to include all of these recipes and there are many good ones in this book. But don't call it "complete" when "Anytime Muffins, Anytime Dinner Rolls, Scoop-and-Bake Dinner Rolls and Freezer Biscuits" are not included among with many, many others.. Can't quite understand why some salads, soups, stews, chilis, slow-cooker and desserts are included?I would have given the book two stars but we know from experience the recipes will be good. Each recipe is marked "EASY" or "FREEZE IT" for quick reference. There is an abundance of hints for "make-ahead" and the index is excellent--pp 398-422. Categories such as "casseroles" and "grilling"; even down to recipes with specific ingredients like anchovies. "Classic Caesar Salad" is also listed as "Caesar Salad, Classic" and under anchovies, croutons, lettuce, Parmesan and salads.Just would have liked "To Store" and "To Serve" or "To Prep, To Store, To Serve" as a part of the recipe and not to make as an adjustment. The editor(s) should have known better. This book should have a completely-revised second addition (and send me a complimentary copy)

I LOVE this book. Don't know why people gave it low reviews because of lack of freezer meals. Does it say freezer meals on the cover??? When I go to my daughter's house, I like to bring a couple of dinners with me. Or when I get overnight guests, I like to make food ahead so I can relax and enjoy my company. These recipes are perfect because you can do a lot of the prep work, if not the whole dinner, ahead of time, and put it together when you want to serve it. It covers everything from appetizers to desserts, to make days ahead to refrigerate, or weeks in the freezer. The best part is it tells you the best way to reheat the food. That was always a challenge with my make ahead meals. Even my mashed potatoes would melt! So I LOVE this book, and, of course, it's ATK so you know the recipes are good.

I was hoping this cookbook would provide some good inspiration for ways to prepare food in advance, to break up meal prep - particularly for hosting - into smaller, manageable chunks.Unfortunately, the "make-ahead" factor is pretty slim, with most things suggested to prep the day before. So, really, this offers ways to break up your meal prep into 2 days, which isn't nearly enough value-add to justify the purchase of the book. I would have appreciated more 3+days in advance options, be it freezing or whatever else.Americans in particular tend to have excessive concerns about food spoilage (largely based on overly conservative goverment regs/guidance), so one possibility is that the estimates are merely about health/fear of liability. If that is the case, the editors would do well to specify what suggestions are based on flavor/integrity, and which are based on standard, restrictive guidance.The result, for me, is a cookbook that is not uniquely useful and not sufficinetly inspiring for its recipes to be worth keeping on the shelf.

great book for events and get-togethers, though not as great for those looking for a weekend prep/weekday meal solution. A make ahead book for weekly meal prep would be great- but it means that the meals need to be able to hold for up to 4 days before cooking...or at least components do. I loved this for party prep where I could do most of the food a day or two ahead, and then really enjoy my family!

I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but I plan to try a few the next time I have house guests. It didn't have many new ideas but a few interesting recipes. Some of the recipes aren't truly make ahead--just things that you can do ahead to have a head start on preparation, -things I always try to do anyway. I consider make-ahead to be things that you totally prepare in advance and simply reheat and there are a few of those.

True, not all of these recipes can be frozen and made weeks later. But the recipes are good, and you are never left wondering whether or not you CAN freeze a recipe and have something edible at a later date. It does lend some versatility and flexibility to your work in the kitchen. One of my better cookbook purchases so far this year.

I "met" Margaret Feinberg several years ago when I first read her book FIGHT BACK WITH JOY. I have been in love with her and everything about her ever since. I especially like that the Bible is set in the Mediterranean area so these recipes are all a part of the Mediterranean diet that I choose to do each day for my health. There are recipes for baked halibut, lamb lollipops, sour dough starter and bread, roasted figs and Brussels sprouts, and gluten free dark chocolate cookies. In the back of Taste and See, there is a list of all of the recipes for easy reference. I confess that I haven't tried one yet, but I picked out several that I want to try. The recipes look easy to follow in the way they are written.I especially like how conversational and down-to-earth Feinberg is in Taste and See. It was both interesting and fun to read. There are also fun pictures of Feinberg as she went to each of the places mentioned in the book to do her research. It isn't hard to visualize her making the travels or cooking with her husband. There are also side bars with extra tidbits of interesting information and simple activities to do to put faith in action. I think this would be such a fun book to do in a small group or with a group of foodie friends. I truly enjoyed the whole book.

I feel so very privileged to have been one of the first to review the first three chapters of Margaret Feinberg’s literary morsel, Taste and See: Discovering God among Butchers, Bakers and Fresh Food Makers. In true Margaret fashion we are immediately swept into a world of vibrant images as she paints word pictures for us connecting the food we put in our bellies and the food we create from God. The bond between reclining at the table for physical sustenance and supping at God’s table with His Word as the food we need to feed our spirometer.Who knew that learning about figs would awaken anticipation and create expectancy regarding where God is at work in our lives. When I read, “Whenever Jesus says, “Look at the fig tree,” he is challenging our notions of attentiveness and expectations.”, I was immediately on alert to begin noting those little things that grab my attention that cry “new, ready, ripe” in my life.And then there are the amazing recipes!I’m so excited to finish reading this book now that it is in my hands!!
